Are the Stonehenge stones INVINCIBLE?

They’ve stood for thousands of years, so could the stones at Stonehenge be invincible?

Many seem to think they could be, so we put the question to Heather Sebire, Senior Property Curator at Stonehenge for English Heritage.

“Everybody thinks they’re probably invincible because they’re huge rocks, but Stonehenge has many different components,” she told Greatest Hits Radio.

Heather told us it’s more of a ‘monitoring’ job as the stones don’t need a lot done to them.

“We avoid touching them as much as possible,” she said, explaining the geologists that touching the stones can eventually affect the geology of the stones.

“And then the stones have Lichen’s growing on them, air plants, which have actually got protection in their own right as they’re also quite significant.”

An important check that the staff at English Heritage carry out is on the stability of the stones, due to climate change: “We do check that they’re not going to fall down anytime soon!” Heather said.

So are the stones at Stonehenge invincible? You know what, they really might be.
