Two tiny kittens found in a cardboard box in a skip in Tidworth by local soldiers were unable to be saved despite the best efforts of a local charity.

Cat Watch Rescue Shelter took the pair in believed to be around 24-36 hours old after the were discovered in the garrison town earlier this month.

Although the area is known for a high number of feral cats Marnie Buckland from the Amesbury charity believes the tiny kittens were dumped deliberately;

" It looks they were put in box by someone who probably had kittens at home and then put in a skip because the mum couldn't have got them in and out of it by herself."

She told Greatest Hits Radio it's left her 'angry and heartbroken'.

Marnie and one of her dedicated hand-rearers tried in vain to save the pair which the soldiers had nicknamed Archie and AJ but they sadly passed away.

"They both faded and there was nothing we could do in the end. At least they didn't die, freezing cold and starving to death in a cardboard box, they were in the warm and they had full tummies."

Tough year for charity

Cat Watch Rescue Charity has been inundated with cats and kittens this year and currently has around 70 looking for loving homes.

At one point they were so overwhelmed they had 130 kittens and 50 adult cats.

The ongoing work is a big strain on Marnie, her team and the charity's finances particularly when they need extra attention or medical help like Archie who needs a full dental extraction at a cost of £1500-2000.

Archie needs dental work in the region of £1500-£2000

You can support the charity through a number of ways and can find out more on its website along with details of how to rehome a cat.
