It's been confirmed that Mayor of Salisbury, Atiqul Hoque, has been expelled from the Conservative Party.

It's alleged that Councillor Hoque has sent "offensive and inappropriate" messages on WhatsApp and social media.

The Tories have not disclosed the nature of the messages, but it's believed they are anti-Semitic.

Cllr Hoque denies wrongdoing and will continue in his role as Mayor of the city, a position he has held since May 2023, as an independent and will appeal the decision to remove him from the party.

He's been a City councillor for St Edmunds since 2015 and has also served a short stint as a Wiltshire councillor.

Cllr Hoque has been contacted for comment.
