There will be no public Christmas lights switch on event in either Salisbury or Fordingbridge this year.

The festive decorations are already up in our city, but there will be no ceremony to see them lit up.

The Salisbury switch on is usually held in mid to late November and traditionally attracts around 10,000 people.

Restrictions around large gatherings due to Covid -19 and difficulty with social distancing means the event can't go ahead.

In a statement the City Council said it was a tough decision.

"Following the government’s advice around the Coronavirus pandemic, Salisbury City Council has taken the difficult decision to cancel Salisbury Christmas Lights Switch On this year."

"Unfortunately after weighing up the options surrounding the event, the City Council has decided that it is too much of a risk to the traders and public."

Fordingbridge Town Council has taken a similar decision with the lights in the town expected to be switch on in a private ceremony.

Meanwhile, Salisbury City Council say that more details about their festive schedule will be announced soon.
