A motorist called emergency services after spotting a pony on the A36 near Ower on Monday.

On arrival emergency services discovered a second pony upside down in a ditch. It's believed the animal had been involved in a collision.

The loose pony was caught and a specialist animal rescue team from Hampshire Fire and Rescue along with a vet were called to help the stricken animal in what's been described as "a challenging rescue."

The pony managed to right itself with encouragement but needed assistance to get out the ditch.

A vet had to sedate the pony before it could be moved.

A barrel-skid, a sideways move up the bank was used to pull the pony out the ditch.

Almost free!

After being moved to safety both ponies were taken to Endell Vets Equine Hospital near Salisbury for a check-up.

Hampshire Police closed the A36 between West Wellow and Ower for more than four hours to allow the rescue operation to take place.

The ponies were later reunited with their owner and are happily back in their field.

Safe and sound and back where they belong!

It's not clear how the pair got out.
