A Salisbury philanthropist and long time supporter of the District Hospital's Stars Appeal has died, aged 90.

Sir Christopher Benson passed away on January 21st, with the details now released.

The Stars Appeal has paid tribute, calling him a 'hugely generous and highly committed supporter'.

Donations from Sir Christopher and his late wife Lady Jo Benson led to the creation of the Benson Suite at our hospital, which gives families who suffer to loss of a baby a place to reflect and get support.

Further support went towards Salisbury's first-ever bereavement midwife.

The Stars Appeal have said that's been invaluable:

"The Benson Suite and dedicated bereavement midwife have transformed the care provided at Salisbury Hospital to local families who so sadly lose a baby. Sir Christopher’s legacy, alongside that of Lady Benson's, will live on through the lives their generosity will continue to touch over the months and years to come."

Sir Christopher is survived by his sons Julian and Charles.

Lady Jo Benson passed away in 2022.

A funeral service for Sir Christopher is expected to be held at Salisbury Cathedral, with a date yet to be set.
