More than 100 flood defence schemes approved for West Country
The money has been confirmed by the Government
More than 1,000 flood prevention schemes have been given funding, with many across the South West.
The Government says it's investing record £2.65 billion over two years towards the construction of new flood schemes and the repair and maintenance of existing ones (see list below).
This year around £430 million is going towards construction and a further £220 million to reinstate flood defences to ‘their full standard of service and original design life to help protect communities'.
Around 40 flood schemes across Wiltshire, Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire and Dorset will benefit from over £110 million of funding - with 70 flood schemes across Devon and Cornwall.
The list includes
•Bath Flood Defence Scheme – a scheme to replace Twerton Gates to manage the risk of failure and maintain river levels will receive £3.5 million and is forecast to better protect 1,186 properties by the end of 2025/26.
• Higher Brixham Watercourse Culvert Replacement – a project to improve the structural integrity of the culvert will benefit from £853k and is forecast to improve the standard of protection to 70 properties by the end of 2025/26.
• Lympstone – Wotton Brook Flood Defence Scheme improvements – a project to improve the existing flood defence scheme by tying the flood wall into higher ground will receive £75k and is forecast to better protect 94 properties by the end of 2025/26.
* Bridgwater Tidal Barrier – which will receive £47.2m. Set to be an operational site by 2027, the barrier will better protect 11,300 homes and 1,500 businesses from tidal flooding in Bridgwater and nearby communities and provide £2 billion in benefits to the local area.
* Wareham Coastal Change – a compensatory habitat scheme at Arne Moors, Dorset, will benefit from £12.5 million.
* Poole Bridge to Hunger Hill Flood Defences in Dorset, which will receive £12.2 million and protect 135 homes.
Caroline Douglass, Executive Director for Flood and Coastal Risk Management for the Environment Agency, said: “Protecting communities from the devastating impact of flooding is our priority.
“The delivery of the schemes in Devon and Cornwall (and the West Country) will be welcome news for homeowners and businesses, who have experienced flooding in the past and may face more extreme weather as our climate continues to change.
“Our focus is now on working with local councils and Regional Flood and Coastal Committees to deliver these schemes on time, ensuring as many properties as possible are protected.”
The Government says it has prioritised £140 million to ensure that 29 schemes, which are in progress but struggling with cost pressures, can be delivered without further delays, protecting nearby communities as soon as possible.
Floods Minister Emma Hardy said: “The role of Government is to protect its citizens. However, we inherited flood defences in their worst condition on record.
“Through our Plan for Change, this government will deliver a decade of national renewal and economic growth. As part of that we are investing a record £2.65 billion to build and repair over 1,000 flood defences across the country.”
