Taunton Town Football Club has reportedly been issued with a winding up petition by HMRC - usually used against a company that's not able to pay its debts.

It's not clear how much the National League South team owes, and we're yet to know when there will be a court hearing.

It all comes after a post on X, which saw a corporate solicitor from a fans group screenshotting the winding-up petition.

A worst-case scenario for such a petition would force the Peacocks into liquidation - however this certainly isn't yet the situation faced by the club.

A 'short term issue'

Clarifying the speculation on social media this afternoon, bosses said: "We are aware of a lot of press speculation and obviously this can cause concern, we can confirm we owe no VAT as this was totally paid last week but we do have some PAYE outstanding with HMRC.

"We have been in communication with HMRC for a while discussing the situation but have received no help or guidance from them.

"As a result we are in communication with the National League to help us liaise with HMRC to find a solution to this short term issue.

"No further statement will be made by the club."

An HMRC spokesperson said: “We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and only file winding-up petitions once we’ve exhausted all other options, in order to protect taxpayers’ money.”

The Somerset FA tell us they always support clubs in situations like this.

A spokesperson from the organisation said: "Somerset FA are aware of various comments and statements across social media today regarding a potential situation at Taunton Town Football Cub, however, we are yet to receive any official communications directly from the club concerning the situation."
