After being left on a cliff edge throughout season three, viewers finally discovered the culprit of the shocking crime turned out to be taxi driver Clive's 16-year-old step son. It was revealed Michael had been pressured into committing the crime by Leo Humphries, after Leo groomed the youngster.

Now Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall has revealed he actually changed the identity of Trish's rapist whilst writing the script for the gripping TV drama.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Chris told viewers Michael wasn't always going to be the attacker. He said, "I wrote episode one, draft one and I thought it was somebody and then I was thinking about it and I was like, 'oh actually that’s how it should resolve'. It changed slightly but then from the second draft of episode one it was always the same."

Chris didn't go on to spill who his first choice was, but viewers of the show believe it could have been Leo Humphries.

Fans have fallen in love with the working relationship between Detective Inspector Alec Hardy and Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller over the last three seasons, so it was only fitting that the final ever scene involved the two.

Fans were quick to plead with bosses of the show to make more episodes and expressed their love for the storyline.

The show's official Twitter account later thanked fans for their support.

Broadchurch first hit our TV screens for season one back in 2013 when a small coastal town was thrown into frenzy after the murder of a little boy (Daniel Latimer). With fans left wondering who committed the shocking murder, bosses went to great lengths to keep the identity a secret.

Following the success of season one, the show won a number of awards including a BAFTA Award.
