Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks is known for its quick turnaround in characters, but fans will be pleased to know that a long-standing Hollyoaks favourite will be returning later in the year. Jennifer Metcalfe, who plays the role of Mercedes McQueen, has announced to fans she has signed a new contract with the soap.

Jennifer, who previously left to give birth to her son Daye, announced her exciting news during a recent interview.

Revealing she's signed a new one-year contract, Jennifer told the Daily Mail that she will return to filming in June this year.

She said, "I've signed for another year on the show. I always do it on a year-to-year basis. And I haven't got a clue what the storylines are yet. I get back to filming in June."

The actress then revealed her love for her character, she added, "I love playing Mercedes. Mostly when she's being mischievous or screwing someone over. I'm lucky because I have had some amazing, credible and intense storylines on Hollyoaks. I'm excited. Whenever I go back, I always come back with a swing in my step."

Jennifer left Hollyoaks in 2017 and later welcomed her first child with her boyfriend, former Geordie Shore star Greg Lake.

The actress welcomed a baby boy on 20th June, with a rep telling OK! Online, "We are delighted to announce that our client Jennifer Metcalfe and partner Greg Lake have welcome a baby boy into the world yesterday. Mother and baby are doing fine."

A month later, Jennifer and Greg then revealed they'd decided to call their son Daye Colmic Lake.

Explaining the unusual name choice, Jennifer said at the time, "My dad was called Colin and Greg's dad is Mick. Greg quite likes having the dads' names carry on and I'm not a fan of more than one middle name. I wanted something original."

With Jennifer returning to filming in June, her first scenes back as the infamous Mercedes McQueen are expected to air later in the year.

Hollyoaks continues on Channel 4, weekdays at 6.30pm.
