More than 8,000 homes were left without power due to Storm Isha, Electricity North West has confirmed.

The organisation - responsible for distributing and maintaining electricity for much of the region - also revealed 41,000 homes were affected during the storm's peak.

In a post on X, formally Twitter, on Sunday night, Electricity North West said:

"We are currently experiencing high call volumes due to Storm Isha. This is leading to long wait times. Please only stay on the line to report hazardous situations or urgent welfare concerns. Kind Regards ENWL."

The organisation then posted to X again just after 11pm reporting that engineers were unable to respond to callouts due to the strength of the winds:

"Our network has experienced widescale damage. We have had to stand crews down due to unsafe climbing conditions. Restoration times have been pushed back to Tuesday at 17:00 as a precaution. We will be back on site first thing to assess damage. Kind Regards ENWL."

Rachael Parr, People & Corporate Services Director at Electricity North West, said:

"The eight thousand properties now need our engineers to go out which requires physical repairs and we've not been able to do that until it's safe to do so.

"We are very much ready on the starting block with our engineers to get out as soon as we can to get customers restored".
