Gritters at the ready ahead of some Staffordshire snow

Highways chiefs in Staffordshire have told Greatest Hits Radio News that an "army" of gritting crews will be ready to roll as snow is predicted to hit the county tomorrow.

The Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning for snow covering the whole of Staffordshire, from 6am on Thursday until 6am on Friday. An Amber warning for snow is in place for most of the Staffordshire Moorlands from 12 noon until 6pm on Thursday.

Staffordshire’s highways crews will be out in force this evening, monitoring conditions and gritting primary and secondary routes in readiness for snowy conditions.

In the Moorlands, hill contractors and snow ploughs will be helping to clear the way.

Crews will then be working around the clock to keep the roads clear.

County Council Cabinet Member for Highways David Williams said: “With yellow and amber weather warnings in place, our crews will be busy this evening gritting our primary and secondary routes. They will then be on hand and ready to roll if needed to clear the roads and keep Staffordshire moving.

“The Moorlands generally sees the worst of the snowy conditions, so our specialised hill contractors will also be working around the clock to clear routes as best they can.”

With the snowy conditions, people are being reminded to take extra care and allow extra time for their journey if they need to be out and about.

David added: “Grit needs traffic to travel over it to work effectively, so I would ask people to take extra care over the next couple of days. Our gritting crews will be doing whatever they can to keep the county moving, but I would ask that people leave more time for their journeys, and drive to the conditions of the road.”
