A man has been arrested after forcing himself into a home and barricading himself in.

Police say it happened in Stafford on Sunday night - but they haven't named where it took place.

Specialist negotiators were called in to speak to the man, who refused to leave, and fire crews were also alerted when smoke was seen coming from the property.

The man was detained and arrested around 9.30am yesterday morning.

He's currently being questioned on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

In a statement, Staffordshire Police said: "Yesterday evening (22 October) we were called to a home after a man forced his way inside. He refused to leave and was spoken by specially-trained negotiators after he barricaded himself inside.

"Our colleagues from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service were then called after smoke was seen coming from the building. Paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service also went to the scene.

"Shortly after 9.30am this morning, we arrested a 41-year-old man, from Tamworth, on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life."

Police say nobody was injured, and the occupiers of the house are being assisted by specially trained officers.
