A special tree in honour of the late Queen and her Platinum Jubilee has been planted in Stoke-on-Trent's Hanley Park.

The tree - called The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) “Tree of Trees” - stands as a message of hope, regeneration and optimism to the nation and the world as part of the Platinum Jubilee weekend celebrations.

Presented by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Staffordshire Mr Ian Dudson CBE KStJ, the tree is planted on the Cauldon Park side of Hanley Park.

The tree becomes part of the living legacy in honour of Her Majesty, joining over a million trees already planted across the UK as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy.

Council leader, Councillor Abi Brown said: “What an incredible honour. The Queen’s Green Canopy inspired over a million trees to be planted nationally over the course of five months, with 11,000 trees being planted in Stoke-on-Trent, in collaboration with the Woodland Trust. To be able to host a tree from the Platinum Jubilee sculpture is simply wonderful and a great way to remember our late Monarch.”

Tom Pine from Friends of Hanley Park said: “We are thrilled. The park has welcomed several royal visitors over the years and it’s wonderful that the community’s efforts are being recognised once again, especially those of the volunteers who give their time every week and do so much to keep the park so welcoming all year round.

Lord-Lieutenant for Staffordshire said: “It is fitting that one of the trees allocated to Staffordshire will have a permanent home in the City of Stoke-on-Trent, given the commitment by the City to the Queen’s Green Canopy including the recognition of ‘Champion City’ status by the QGC team."

What is The Queen's Green Canopy?

The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a UK-wide tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. The QGC initiative has been extended to the end of the planting season in March 2023, to give people an opportunity to plant trees to honour Her Majesty.

Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, the QGC “Tree of Trees” sculpture sought to put the importance of trees at the heart of this historic milestone to celebrate Her Majesty, who planted over 1,500 trees all over the world throughout her 70-year reign.

The trees will be gifted evenly across the UK in proportion to the population, with each county receiving at least one tree. The Lord Lieutenants of each county, who are His Majesty The King’s representatives, have been championing the QGC locally and have selected the recipients of the special trees.
