An Ipswich man has been sentenced to nine and a half years’ imprisonment for serious sexual offences.

Nicholas Ryan, 33, of Defoe Road, appeared at Ipswich Crown Court for sentencing on Friday 15 March after previously pleading not guilty to two counts of rape and two counts of attempted rape of a woman.

Ryan was convicted of all four counts on 11 January, following a four-day trial. He has been sentenced to nine years and six months’ imprisonment, with an additional five years extended licence.

The leader of the police investigation, Detective Constable Abygail McEvoy, said: “The victim has shown incredible courage and strength throughout the court process."

“I would like to commend her bravery in coming forward and would encourage anyone else who is a victim of sexual abuse or sexual violence to report it to police and seek support from the agencies available.”
