Surry Police chase ends in driver arrested on suspicion of multiple offences

The suspect was found in a river after failing to stop for officers

A man from Staines has been arrested on suspicion of several offences after a police chase in Surrey ended with the escaping suspect found in a river.

Surrey Police says patrolling officers noticed a vehicle being driven in a dangerous manner in Chertsey at around 3:30am yesterday (19 January).

The driver failed to stop, resulting in a chase. which ended in Mead Lane.

The driver then fled from the vehicle and was found in a nearby river and pulled to safety.

He was arrested on suspicion of:

Going equipped for theft of a motor vehicle

Possession of a weapon for release of a noxious liquid/gas

Criminal damage to a property under the value of £5000

Failure to stop after a road traffic accident

Driving dangerously

Driving whilst disqualified

Taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent

He has been released under investigation.
