Bomb disposal experts have carried out a controlled explosion on a West Sussex beach after ordnance was found there on Sunday (November 15th).

The item was found by a member of the public at the entrance to Pagham Harbour, with coastguard teams from Selsey called out at just before 9am.

The ordnance was located, photos were taken and sent to E.O.D (Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team) and a cordon was put in place and the beach was closed.

Crews remained at the scene until just before 3pm.

A HM Coastguard Selsey spokesperson said:

"Ordnance comes in all shapes and sizes and ordnance found on this beach has been found to be highly explosive, so please do not touch it and call the Coastguard straight away.

"The coast and the sea can catch you out whether you’re local or not. Our message remains: call 999 Coastguard if you’re in trouble.

"Please help us and our families stay safe. Be aware of the risks, keep your distance."

In an emergency out at sea, on the beach or along the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
