Brighton man jailed for 'violent' scissor attack in convenience store

A Brighton man who repeatedly stabbed a man with scissors before fleeing to Liverpool has been jailed for more than three years.

Ryan McLean, 39 was caught on CCTV chasing the victim into a convenience store in South Street on February 27th, before assaulting him in the stockroom.

The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A manhunt was launched. including a £3000 reward from Crimestoppers, after McLean fled to Liverpool.

He was eventually arrested in the Dingle area of Liverpool on April 29th, with the help of Merseyside Police.

At Lewes Crown Court on Friday (July 15th), he was sentenced to 33 months in prison for gross bodily harm and six months for weapon possession.

He also received an additional four-week jail sentence to run consecutively for breaching a suspended prison sentence for possession of a knife and drug driving.

Detective Inspector Neil Phillips of Sussex Police said:

"Ryan McLean is a violent offender with a significant criminal history and are pleased to have him off the streets’.

He added, ‘despite his attempts to evade capture, we and our partners in Merseyside Police were able to track him down’.

“The age-old message that ‘you can run but you can’t hide’ still rings true, and this sentence should serve as a warning to anybody attempting to hide from the law that they will be found and justice will be served.”
