A lorry driver has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after his vehicle overturned on the A27 near Chichester early on Friday morning.

The crash happened at 5.40am, when the vehicle collided with the central reservation between the Fishbourne roundabout and Warblington before being hit by a car.

Sussex Police said the 62-year-old's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing.

The car driver, a 50-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries.

Pictures from the scene show the vehicle on its side.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said:

“Joint Fire Control received a 999 call at 5.41am this morning following a road traffic collision on the A27 between Fishbourne and Warblington involving an HGV and a car.

“Crews from Chichester and Bognor Regis were mobilised to the scene along with Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service crews from Havant and Cosham.

“Firefighters freed the driver of the HGV using small tools, while the driver of the car self-released prior to our arrival at the scene.

“Crews worked quickly to help contain a diesel leak onto the carriageway using environmental packs.

“The A27 is currently closed in both directions between the Fishbourne Roundabout at Chichester and Warblington in Hampshire while the vehicle is recovered and is expected to remain closed in both directions for considerable time this morning.

“Drivers are urged to avoid the area, as the parallel A259 between Warblington and Chichester is exceptionally busy.”

Traffic was held for much of the morning while emergency services attended the incident, but drivers have now been allowed to turn around on the carriageway.

There's warnings that the closure could last for much of Friday.

Anyone who witnessed what happened can report online or call 101, quoting Operation Milldown.
