A new report has revealed the possibility of an 800-capacity music venue, indoor skate park and padel tennis courts at Worthing's Teville Gate site.

Pop-up markets for smaller independent businesses also feature in the report to Adur & Worthing Councils’ Joint Strategic Committee, which also says QED Sustainable Urban Developments Ltd, is the preferred bidder to develop the site after a tender process was conducted.

The revamp would be in use for the next three years while longer term developments are figured out for Teville Gate, which could include affordable housing and more retail. The report has proposed a partnership with development body London and Continental Railways Ltd for the long term plans.

"Leader of Worthing Borough Council Kevin Jenkins said: "Let's open it up, get people able to use facilities or the space in there, and recreate the connection between the train station and the town and actually get a bit of life back into that part of the town.

"We've been hearing from people for some time that they would like to see more space for skateboarding, inline skates particularly and in particular just tidying the place up. People have, you know, they're tired of seeing it untidy and boarded up and we’re the same!

It's a whole variety of things that actually over a two or three year period, will bring some real life to that place in town".

Discussing the long term plans for the site, Councillor Jenkins continued: "It will be a mixed development that will be housing, we’ve got an acute need for housing in the town we know that but equally that project has got to be supported so there will be an element of retail in there to help offset some of the cost".

The report's recommendations will be discussed at a meeting today.
