A 38-year-old woman has appeared in court charged in connection with the attempted murder of two children by poisoning them.

Sussex Police received reports of an incident at the family home on Hunters Way in Uckfield in the early hours of Thursday morning (February 8th).

When officers arrived, they found mother Jilumol George, together with her two children, aged 9 and 13 respectively - and were taken to hospital for treatment.

After being treated at hospital, members of the force suspected that the children had fallen ill due to being poisoned and, as a result, arrested George.

Officers arrived at the Hunters Way estate to check on the family.

Whilst the children continue their recovery in hospital, George appeared at Brighton Magistrates' Court on Saturday (February 10) charged on two counts of attempted murder.

As well as these charges, she was also charged by police on two counts of two counts of administering poison with intent to endanger life or inflict grievous bodily harm.

Following the hearing, George was remanded in custody, and will appear at a Crown Court on March 8th.

Speaking about the case, Chief Inspector Mark Evans from Sussex Police said that the public should feel safer thanks to increased officers in the area.

"I want to reassure the local community that this is an isolated incident and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with it," he explained.

"This is a fast-moving investigation and there will be an increased police presence in the area over the next few days, however, I am satisfied there is no wider risk to the public."
