Two people die after being hit by trains in West Sussex

The incidents happened within half an hour of each other

Two people have died after being hit by trains in separate incidents in West Sussex.

They took place within half an hour of each other on Tuesday (January 26th) near to Billingshurst and Balcombe stations.

Emergency services were first called to Billingshurst at around 12.52pm.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said:

"Paramedics also attended however sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and the file will be prepared for the coroner."

Trains were held between Horsham and Barnham stations for around five hours before returning to normal as of 6pm on Tuesday.

The second incident took place at Balcombe, between Gatwick Airport and Haywards Heath, shortly afterwards.

Emergency services were called out at around 1.22pm, with the person being pronounced dead at the scene.

As with the first incident, British Transport Police said the death is not being treated as suspicious, with a file being prepared for the coroner.

Trains running between Gatwick Airport and Haywards Heath were cancelled or delayed for more than ten hours, until just after midnight on Wednesday (January 27th).
