The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in West Sussex has reached 10,000, with another death taking place at the county's main NHS Trust.

The latest figures from NHS England showed a patient being cared for by the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust passed away on Tuesday (December 8th) within 28 days of testing positive for the virus.

It's the second death recorded at the trust in the space of as many days and the seventh since the start of December, with the total since the start of the pandemic increasing to 146.

The trust runs St Richard's Hospital in Chichester, Worthing Hospital and Southlands Hospital in Shoreham.

Daily death counts are revised each day, with each case backdated to the actual date of death.

This means some of the deaths that were first recorded in the latest period may actually have taken place days earlier.

NHS England guidance states: "Confirmation of Covid-19 diagnosis, death notification and reporting in central figures can take up to several days and the hospitals providing the data are under significant operational pressure."

In total, 511 deaths have been recorded in West Sussex where people had a positive coronavirus test result for Covid-19 and died within 28 days of the first positive test in all settings, including care homes, private homes and in hospices.

Mid Sussex has seen the most with 128 deaths, followed by Horsham with 103, Crawley, with 79, Worthing with 65, Chichester with 55, Arun with 50 and Adur with 28.
