Our region's firefighters have revealed they will continue to tackle a blaze at a Wiltshire recycling centre "for several days".

At 11:10pm on Wednesday 17 November, crews were called to a fire at 'Grist Environmental' - near Devizes.

Up to 300 tonnes of waste were set alight during the incident - and crews from Calne, Royal Wootton Bassett and Trowbridge attended.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) has apologised to local residents for the "intense" smoke plumes, as staff continue their work.

It has also confirmed temporary traffic lights will be installed on the A342, from Friday 19 November.

This is because a high volume pump will be based near the site, to provide a better water supply. While the pump is in use, hose lines will need to cross the carriageway.

These traffic lights are going to be in place until the fire is extinguished.

'Keep doors and windows closed'

DWFRS Group Manager Richard Coleman said: “Once we start getting a more constant water supply onto the fire, the smoke plume will intensify, and we apologise to local residents who may be concerned by this.

"However, this approach is intended to bring the fire to a close more quickly, which will be to the benefit of everyone. If anyone is concerned about the smoke, they are advised to keep doors and windows closed.

"We anticipate maintaining our current approach for the next couple of days, and ask people to bear with us while this work is on-going".

It's believed the fire, which is now being investigated, was started accidentally.
