Major plans to redevelop Swindon town centre are one step closer to happening.

On Wednesday evening, the Borough Council approved proposals for a new 'Cultural Quarter' on the Kimmerfield regeneration site, between the train station and former Debenhams Building.

If local investment is found, the project will cost an estimated £80 million.

However, the authority claims that the Quarter would add £35 million of annual value to the local economy.

The plans include a new 1,200 seat Wyvern Theatre, doubling its existing capacity.

According to the Council, the site would also have a new dance studio, arts museum and digital media hub.

'We need a reason for people to visit and enjoy the town centre'

Greatest Hits Radio has spoken to Councillor Dale Heenan, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Town Centre, Culture and Heritage:

"We need a reason for people to visit and enjoy the town centre, that isn't just around retail and shops.

"That's what we're trying to do ... so that people could be proud about the town centre.

"If we're all honest with ourselves, it (town centre) is generally the thing that holds us back".

The Council won't be paying for the project from its own budget, so is now preparing a prospectus for potential investors.

It could take a decade for the Quarter to be built in full.

The Artistic Director at Swindon’s Prime Theatre, Mark Powell said: “Too often Swindon’s young people are disadvantaged by lack of experience or aspiration.

"Every week in Swindon schools, I see how art awakens imagination, education and empowerment.

“The town is making a bold commitment to future generations with this plan. Swindon won’t just be a place to live and work, but a place to dream and achieve as well".
