Staffordshire Police has launched an investigation into the pitch invasion that marred the aftermath of Port Vale's win against Swindon Town in the League Two play-offs.

Following last night's second leg at Vale Park, the semi-final finished 2-2 on aggregate, meaning the tie was decided on penalties.

Ellis Iandolo's miss from the spot led to thousands of spectators flooding the field of play. Whilst many were seen celebrating with the victorious home team, some supporters appeared to goad Swindon's players and staff.

The Robins' full-back Mandelo Egbo was reportedly assaulted during the invasion, leaving the pitch with a cut nose.

Superintendent Gemma Ward, Head of Force Operations, said: "Staffordshire Police and Port Vale are committed to ensuring that events at Vale Park are safe and enjoyable for everyone in attendance.

"Anyone seeking to ruin this will be firmly dealt with – such actions have no place in our local community. A thorough investigation in now underway".

'It's absolutely disgusting'

Speaking immediately after the pitch invasion, Swindon's manager Ben Garner was incensed with the way he says his side were treated.

"Players have been physically and verbally abused. I know I've seen it in some of the other play-off games.

"I don't know where we're going as a country. It's absolutely disgusting," he told Sky Sports.

'Strongest possible action against anyone found guilty'

Port Vale, who are now through to the play-off final against Mansfield Town, have told Greatest Hits Radio they "will not tolerate such irresponsible behaviour".

The club insist they "remain committed to taking the strongest possible action against anyone found guilty of being involved in criminal activities". The fans involved could be barred from future matches.

Officers are now working with both clubs to identify the individuals who were responsible.

Anyone who witnessed the assault is being urged to contact Staffordshire Police by calling 101, quoting incident number 213 of 16 May.
