A Teesside science teacher has missed out on a million-dollar award for teaching.

Dr Richard Spencer who works at Middlesbrough College was in Dubai for the announcement of the Varkey Foundation Global Teaching Prize which recognises an ‘exceptional’ individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession.

Dr Spencer uses dance, songs, poem and games to make lessons memorable and interesting.

He said: "I believe in engagement in lessons, if students are engaged, my conviction is they learn much better."

He said that songs and dances like the ‘mitosis mamba’ and the ‘DNA boogie’ help to teach pupils ‘very complicated science’.

The winner will get one million US dollars paid over 10 years and will be asked to serve as a global ambassador for the Varkey Foundation.
