The charity behind men's health awareness month 'Movember' is launching a new institute to research new ways to help men live longer and healthier lives.

In the UK, two out of five men die before the age of 75, while men on average live five years less than women.

The new 'Movember Men's Health Institute' aims to "significantly reduce preventable death and disability" as well as trying to tackle the high rate at which men take their own lives.

Growing a mo for Movember

Movember is an annual awareness month, best known as a time when men grow moustaches to raise money for charity.

The new institute, operated by the Movember charity, will be a global organisation, aiming to utilise research and health innovations from scientists and practitioners across the world to improve men's health outcomes.

It will look at men's physical and mental health issues equally:

  • 3/4 suicides in the UK are men
  • Suicide is the biggest killer of men between the ages of 20-34
  • 1/8 men will face a prostate cancer diagnosis in their lifetime

Professor Simon Rice has been appointed as the Global Director of the Movember Men's Health Institute.

20 years in the making

He said: "I’m thrilled to embark on this transformative journey with the Movember Men's Health Institute.

"It is an initiative that will propel us faster towards our goal of improving men's health and wellbeing globally.

"Building on 20 years of action, we aim to strengthen Movember as the international leader in men's health, supporting research, building partnerships, nurturing talent, and delivering results that will change and save lives.”
