Detectives are investigating whether acid was used in an attack on a housing estate in Salford.

A man was taken to Salford Royal Hospital for treatment to minor injuries, not believed to be life-threatening after the incident near shops on the Brookhouse Estate in Salford around 3.17pm on Tuesday.

A source on the estate said that a young man had been injured after being sprayed in the face, with rumours circulating the substance was acid or bleach.

The area around the shops was cordoned off temporarily by the fire service after the incident.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed police were called to a "suspected substance assault" and officers arrested two males, aged 16 and 17 on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm.

Both the suspects have been bailed.

The force said they could not confirm what the substance used was, but clothing has been sent off for testing.
