Princess Anne visits Snettisham
HRH stopped by the sailing club
The Princess Royal joined members and sailors at Snettisham Beach Sailing Club yesterday (12 July) to celebrate developments at the club.
Club members and guests from ages 8 to 80 enjoyed tea and chatting with Her Royal Highness. The Princess Royal is the President of the Royal Yachting Association and a keen sailor.
Snettisham is a magnet for introducing many women and girls to the sport and The Princess chatted with the Juniors race training group on the lake.
The business of the day was to name the new race control boat (sailors call it "The Committee Boat") as "Avocet "reflecting the bird life abundant at the Beach and the club's support for the RSPB's work there. The previous boat sank and was wrecked at the Beach in a gale in September 2020 after nearly 50 years of service at the club. The new boat is appropriately avocet - like, finished in black and white with an upturned prow!
Princess Anne also opened the club bungalow, which has been completely renovated in the last year and converted from a dank abode into a bright modern holiday home for let and also available to accommodate the needs of the club's disabled sailors and instructors. It represents a £60,000 investment of the club's funds and the letting income will be used to fund club sailing development.
Club Commodore Adrian Tebbutt commented:
"It was lovely to speak to Her Royal Highness about sailing and the numbers of girls who are taking part with us. We also spoke about how much sailing we can do at a location where we are so dependent on our tides."
