Phil Sesemann, 29, finished seventh in the London Marathon, and was the first British male to complete the marathon.

The Yorkshireman finished the Sunday race in 2 hours, 12 minutes and 58 seconds- quick enough to qualify for next year's Commonwealth games and the European Championships.

And Sesemann, who works full time in St James' and Leeds General Infirmary, and as a part-time athlete, calls himself a "junior doctor and occasional distance athlete, unsponsored” on social media.

Reflecting on the marathon, Sesemann said:

"The last six miles were a death march, it was just really difficult to get the pain out of my head.

"The headwind was really strong and I was just employing damage limitation at a solid pace."

He added:

"I work in A&E at St James's Hospital in Leeds and my colleagues have been incredible in supporting me in the build-up.

"Today has been special, to share it with my friends, family and colleagues - they have enabled me to reduce my hours and reduce my risk from Covid so I can continue training."
