Three men have been seriously injured after a crash on the M1 near Wakefield last night, after a car failed to stop for police.

They were in a black Skoda Fabia which was driving south in the northbound carriageway before hitting a blue BMW 320.

An air ambulance was called to the scene of the collision, which brought traffic to a standstill between junctions 39 and 40.

The motorway was closed for more than eight hours, with police confirming the driver of the BMW was also seriously hurt.

West Yorkshire Police are now asking to speak to any witnesses, and say the crash has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
