Police in Leeds are hunting a man armed with an axe who fled the scene of a multi-car collision.

The crash happened on Scott Hall Lane at the junction with Sheepscar Street North around 5.30 on Saturday evening (10th February).

The man, who was driving a white van, was seen shortly afterwards close to the Arndale Centre in Headingley using the axe to break a bike lock.

He rode off into woods near St Chad's Rise on the bicycle.

Nearby Leeds Beckett University student accommodation was put on lock-down for a time on Saturday night.

Superintendent Lisa Atkinson, of Leeds District Police, described the operation as a significant policing presence, "No one has been seriously hurt and it appears the male has only used the axe as a means of stealing the van and the bicycle, but we would urge anyone who sees this male not to approach him and to contact police on 999, so we can locate him and detain him.
