Welcome to Yorkshire that oversees West Yorkshire have asked councils for 45% more funding.

This is despite admitting "big mistakes" in the way it spent taxpayer's money.

Welcome to Yorkshire says the 45% is justified because they haven't put their prices up for six years.

But local authorities have considered whether to help keep the organisation afloat, as some councils threatened to withhold funding from Welcome to Yorkshire, at a time that its finances were hit hard by the pandemic.

Richmondshire councillor and North Yorkshire County Council opposition leader Stuart Parsons said:

“What have we been getting out of Welcome to Yorkshire? Nothing but scandal. Originally it was supposed to be immediately self-funding, but it has always relied on massive public contributions.

“Councils should not be giving any more money to an organisation that has not demonstrated it is making an effective difference to our lives and our economy.”
