As technology advances, and kids start to play more on consoles and tablets, some of the favourites are being forgotten about, and in a recent poll 50 classic childhood games will soon be consigned to history.

While many of us grew up playing the likes of Grandmother's Footsteps, Cat’s Cradle, Risk and Monopoly, it looks like kids of the future probably won't have even heard of these games that we all know and love!

In recent research conducted by Perspectus Global in July 2023 on behalf of Argos, it was found that 38% of children have never heard of Cribbage, while 30% hadn't heard of Trivial Pursuit, and 27% didn't know about Chess!

According to the research, these days children spend around 1 hour 21 minutes a day using technology, which has eaten into the time spent outside. However, around half of those parents polled said they would like their kids to play with more traditional games as they help to spark children's imaginations.

Argos are celebrating 50 years since their first shop opened and Fay Williams, Head of Toy Buying for Argos, said: "Argos has been passionate about play since we opened our first store in 1973; 50 years later, our ambition to champion the power of play remains just as strong, with a new toy sold on average every two seconds.

"Being at the forefront of children’s toys for 50 years has shown us that the way we play as kids has a big impact on our adult life. It’s wonderful to know that role-playing doctors and nurses using one of our playsets or cooking up a storm in a toy kitchen might spark a passion that lasts a lifetime. That’s why we’re so proud to be launching our biggest-ever toy giveaway and reigniting a life-long love of play in the next generation."
