The Foss Barrier is to be deployed in York this evening.

It's as a number of flood alerts have been issued in North Yorkshire following snow-melt and rain.

The Environment Agency says it will be deployed between 7pm and 8pm.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: “Due to snow melt and some rainfall in the last 24 hours, river levels in York are rising, and we expect to deploy the Foss Barrier between 7-8pm tonight.

“This is a normal operation for this time of year. The barrier will be doing what it was designed to do, managing levels on the River Foss, and protecting up to 1,200 properties and businesses.”
