Better York Leisure Centre says it hopes the easing of lockdown will encourage more people to get active.

The centre - part of the LNER Community Stadium complex - reopened its doors to the public this morning.

Duty Manager Ste Wager says it's a moment the staff have been relishing: "It's been quite a nerve-wrecking start as we opened for just 12 days back in December.

"There's lots of customers eager to return, so that's good news for us. It's a great facility and nice and bright. While we've been closed customers have tried looking through the windows, so we've had lots of interest! It could become a hub for York.

"The pool and gym are open today, and from the 26th April the clip and climb area of the climbing wall will be open. The outdoor 3G pitches are also open now.

"We had everyone back this weekend doing training, so everyone is just happy to be getting back to a proper routine. It's great just to see customer's faces again.

"With us being a new site, people are keen just to look around. It's been a long time coming for the regulars around York, as well".

Ste also hopes people will be encouraged to take up more fitness activities: "I think Covid has affected people in a lot of ways, both physically and mentally.

"For me personally, I think leisure is going to take a huge boost now that we're open again".
