York Central MP Rachael Maskell has praised the vaccination effort across the city.

This week we've been meeting some of the staff and volunteers that have helped to put vaccine jabs into the arms of the local population.

Local vaccination site Askham Bar has marked six months this week of their vaccination efforts.

Rachael says the efforts of everyone involved has helped to keep the city safer: "The incredible team of doctors, nurses, volunteers, firefighters, the army have been able to keep us safe during the programme.

"Around half the city has been vaccinated, and it's making such a difference. They (vaccinators) have been out in all weathers to welcome us to the vaccine sites - what an effort.

"I really do thank from the bottom of my heart everyone who has been involved, especially Professor Mike Holmes at Nimbuscare and the team around him.

"Although infection rates are increasing we're not seeing the levels of hospitalisations that we did see earlier this year.

"If you haven't had your vaccine yet I really do urge you to get one. If you have questions please go and talk to somebody - we know that the people who are getting sick now have largely not had a vaccine.

"We're not through this yet - there's plenty to learn with new variants emerging and the prevalence of infections rising. We still need to be vigilant with one another.

"We need to take that responsible step of getting the vaccine, and it's the warm and welcoming team at the hub that's there to support us and the city at this time.

"I've made a number of visits to Askham Bar to see the work that volunteers and NHS workers are all doing together as a united team. We've seen an incredible response from people turning up at all hours to get their vaccine.

"It really is quick and efficient to get your vaccine".
