People are being asked to be prepared and plan ahead if they're going out to exercise

People on the Yorkshire Coast are being asked to be prepared if they are going out to exercise off their Christmas calories.

Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team says to plan ahead by being 'adventure smart' before they set off.

Ian Hugill, an incident controller at the charity, said: "Please get out and enjoy the countryside. We've got some of the most beautiful countryside in England and Wales around us and getting out there is good for your physical and mental health, but if you're out there then take all sensible precautions. If the inevitable does happen then if you do need our assistance, ring 999 ask for the Police and ask for Mountain Rescue.

"We suggest that you ask yourself three simple questions at the start of the day; do I have the right gear for what I'm about to go out and about to do? Do I know what the weather's going to do both now and when I'm planning to finish my activity and do I have the right skills and knowledge to go out and do that? If you can answer those questions honestly and you feel confident then you should go out there and not see us.

"You've also seen recently about how stretched the Ambulance Service are responding to calls and delivering people to accident and emergency departments. If you do go out there and have an accident, make sure you have sufficient and warm clothing to keep yourself comfortable as you may be out there for a protracted period before we get to you and get you back to definitive medical care."
