England footballer Beth Mead has been granted Freedom of the Borough of Scarborough following a Greatest Hits Radio campaign backed by hundreds of people.

We started the call after Beth was left off the list, despite her key role in helping the Lionesses lift the trophy at the Euros last summer.

Among those who backed out campaign were pupils at Beth's old school near Whitby, her first football coach, and her old boss at Sunderland Melanie Reay.

Dame Katherine Grainger, the chair of UK Sport, has described Beth as an inspiration to young girls looking to get into football.

She said: "It must mean so much to Beth to come back home and see kids running around in England tops with her name on the back of it"

"No-one imagines that's the future we could have, and to have that impact and reach, it's really important for athletes to be able to do that."

It's expected a ceremony to hand Beth the award will take place before Scarborough Council is absorbed by a North Yorkshire county-wide authority in April.
