An East Yorkshire Apprentice is encouraging young people to think about taking up an apprenticeship after she took the plunge to start one in the pandemic.

Research shows around half of young people feel more secure in a job that they find interesting.

Samantha Katanda is a 2nd year Aerospace Engineering Degree Apprentice working at BAE Systems.

She said: "Attending workshops and doing assignments wasn't really working for me so then I moved to the apprenticeship. In the first few months of my apprenticeship, I really enjoyed it because we got to go into hangar to actually do maintenance on the aircraft.

"I think this is a good place to start because on my placements I get to do different things and work with different people in the company. I think this will help me to get a wider view of all the things the company is working on in different countries and maybe in the future I might relocate to another country.

"Everything had to be done online because of social distancing and you don't want to spread Covid. I was a bit concerned because obviously I'd move to the apprenticeship for the hands-on aspect but the company were quite good with trying to find safe systems of work and then we were able to start going into the hangars."
