A free community fridge is set to open in Eastfield this week.

Its aim is to reduce landfill by re-distributing food that would otherwise be thrown away.

From this Thursday (19th May) it will be based at the Eastfield café on 120 Westway, which is at the top of the high street, from 10am until 12 noon. People are being urged to bring their own bags.

Hayley Burn, chair of the group, said: "To get to the Scarborough one or the Filey one or the Hunmanby one, it means travelling outside our community and for some people getting on two buses to go to a different fridge is quite a lot, so I was very positive that we should have one in Eastfield.

"We're really hoping it's going to take off and lots of people can come and collect some free food. It's open to everybody. It's not means tested, it's not a foodbank, it's to stop landfill so anybody can come to the fridge and collect some food."

Rachel Calvert is the vice-chair and she said: "We do still require further support from local businesses to put back into our community. We have Fairshare and Morrison's donating food but we do require some more and some more volunteers."

Billa Duggal is a Community Regeneration Officer for Eastfield and he is supporting the project. He added: "One of the problems at the moment is the economic climate. I think when we were having this conversation last year, the supply issues were very, very different and I think the group started to engage with local businesses but what the group has found out is the business is also impacted by the economics here as well.

"The team are really looking forward to welcoming people. It's not just about the food, some of this is actually about bringing the community together and to have a tea, coffee and a biscuit. It's about connecting together and deciding how they want to change, grow and socially connect together."

More volunteers and businesses are also wanted to help the free community fridge. You can contact them on their Facebook page.
