North Yorkshire students celebrate GCSE grades
North Yorkshire GCSE pupils are celebrating after two years of disruption
North Yorkshire’s students have been celebrating after they received their GCSE grades today, following two years of unprecedented disruption due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The County Council says schools have performed exceptionally well as they do every year and the county’s leaders are today full of praise for the enormous resilience young people and their teachers have shown.
“We are incredibly proud of what our young people have achieved” said County Councillor Patrick Mulligan, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Education and Skills. “What they have gone through over the past two years has been unprecedented – constant disruption, constantly in and out of school due to the impact of Covid 19, constant amendments to the curriculum. And yet today we see fantastic results for many and the vast majority of our young people getting the results they were expecting so they can go on with confidence to do the things they want to do.
“They have shown tremendous resilience and have developed a tremendous set of skills - we all know how difficult it has been for them to adapt to new ways of living and learning – and they all deserve to celebrate fully today. I wish to congratulate each and every one of them for their achievements.
“The level of detail and the rigour that has gone into GCSE assessment this year has been so impressive and the results richly deserved. Teachers in the county have gone to considerable lengths to produce the most accurate assessed grades for student including looking at mock exam results, portfolios and coursework, as well as homework and classwork.
“So I also wish to say a very big thank you to our teachers, support staff and headteachers who have gone the extra mile each and every day to keep our schools open, to develop new styles of learning and revised curriculums to keep the education of our young people continuing through these hugely challenging times.
“For those students who have not done as well as they would have wished I say do not despair, there is so much help out there for you in our county and there are always pathways through to what you want to achieve in life.”
Success for adult learners
Adult learners across North Yorkshire are also celebrating after securing outstanding GCSE results.
This is the ninth year that North Yorkshire County Council’s Adult Learning and Skills Service has offered a comprehensive range of GCSE English and maths courses.
This academic year has also seen an 87.5% grade 9 to 4 achievement overall
In GCSE Maths 96% of learners achieved a grade 9 to 4 and results for GCSE English were very positive with 100% achieving a grade 9 to 4.
Over 600 adult learners sign up for the free Maths and English courses with the service every year.
“Congratulations to all of our adult learners who achieved their goals; it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all our students and staff during this very difficult period,” said Cllr Mulligan.
“Our aim is to help adults gain the skills and qualifications they need to be successful in employment. These recent results show it’s never too late to learn and improve your skills to get to where you want to be.”
