Scarborough College has been shortlisted for Senior School of the Year by the Times Educational Supplement.

Scarborough College says it was a welcome surprise for all staff, parents and pupils and because it has been shortlisted for the category, it is also automatically entered for the award Independent School of the Year.

The title Senior School of the Year goes to a day school for its performance in the 2019 – 2020 Academic Year. Judges look for more than just academic achievement and shortlisted schools will have demonstrated innovation, imagination and efforts to develop their pupils to go beyond the league tables.

The awards ceremony will be held online, highlighting the special circumstances that affected most of the 2019 – 2020 Academic Year. Throughout that year, Scarborough College says it did not only rally around to maintain teaching and learning, it also found time to help the community. Teachers were engaged in raising money and awareness, created face masks and visors and the school continues to help Age UK and the Rainbow Centre, getting residents of the Scarborough Borough to the vaccination centre.

Scarborough College says the announcement of the shortlisting was celebrated by staff as recognition of a year of incredibly hard work vindication of the school’s decision never to furlough any teaching staff and maintain a full timetable throughout.

Headmaster Guy Emmett commented:

"‘This is the celebration of one thousand small good deeds and selfless efforts. From our form tutors making personal phone calls to check in with their pupils on a regular basis to the cleaners who almost have to work around the clock to keep the school safe.

"For many schools, these Academic Years will probably go into the books as among the most demanding and unnerving years in recent history. Like many businesses, some independent schools have not come out on the other side either and knowing fellow Heads, I realise this is not for lack of herculean efforts on their side either. If it was up to me, I would have nominated most schools in the country for Senior School of the Year but now we’re in the running, a tiny voice inside says I hope we win it. My colleagues, our parents and above all our pupils deserve the recognition."
