Scarborough's Community Fridge is set to open today (Saturday 9 January), with new rules in place to comply with lockdown restrictions.

Following reports of huge food waste over Christmas, the group was planning to open as normal.

After England's third national lockdown was announced, the rules were revised to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus.

The group have put extra precautions in place

The team say they aren't a food bank, instead volunteers working with food suppliers to intercept produce destined for landfill, and redistribute to local people.

Committee member Vicky Wright tells us: "We're open to everybody,

"But because of the way we operate in terms of getting in just the food that would be surplus, we don't have a regular stock of things to make up a full balanced nutritional diet.

"What we do is we take the food that would otherwise be wasted and make sure that doesn't go into landfill."
