There could be more Roman remains waiting to be discovered in Scarborough and right along the Yorkshire Coast.

After the recent find at a housing development in Eastfield, believed to be a high status luxury villa or religious sanctuary, we've been speaking to an archaeologist at North Yorkshire County Council.

He's told us there could be more discoveries to come, with the Eastfield one being the start of series of finds.

Peter Rowe, Principal Archaeologist at North Yorkshire County Council, said...

"You only have to look down the road at Crossgates at Seamer, where you've got a very similar site to this on Crab Lane. I think anybody that has a house down there has got a very good chance of finding Roman remains in their back garden."

"It's an untapped resource really, that we're only just starting to learn more about, not that it's completely unknown to us but, I've always said that some of the best archaeological sites are found by surprise, and I think this one is no exception."

Peter also told us more about the Eastfield discovery, saying some other experts had been in touch offering advice about what it could have been...

"They provided a very good comparator, for the circular building with the chambers coming off it, from a site in Portugal, a very high status site called a 'Villa Maritima', a kind of seaside retreat for the rich and famous of the Roman empire."
