Scarborough and Filey libraries are commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day today.

It is as North Yorkshire County Council's library service is joining the national remembrance.

Each year the UK observes Holocaust Memorial Day to remember those who suffered in the Holocaust under Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. January 27th 1945 marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

This year’s theme is “One Day” which encourages people to learn about the past in the hope that there will come a day with no genocide.

This week until Monday 31st January, posters, books and educational material will be displayed on the travelling Supermobile library, Filey and Scarborough libraries as well as others across North Yorkshire.

County Councillor Greg White, Executive Member for Libraries, said: “It’s great to see our libraries join the nation in commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day. Last year all our events were online due to coronavirus restrictions so we are really pleased to welcome customers back into our covid-safe buildings.”
