East Riding of Yorkshire Council says it has started an 'ambitious' tree planting project in Bridlington.

It is underway at South Cliff Holiday Park and the new trees and hedgerows are part of the Humber Forest initiative.

Over 1,000 trees have been planted on site, and 356m of hedge, making a total of 2860 stems planted in various locations around the recently extended holiday park.

The initial planting took place over three days in late January, and was carried out by the Plant a Tree Today (PATT) Foundation, based at Preston, one of the Humber Forest partner organisations. PATT use a combination of volunteers and the Green Task Force to plant the trees.

Funding for the planting came from the Humber Forest, through the Defra Trees for Climate grant scheme.

Councillor Chris Matthews, portfolio holder for Environment and Climate Change, explained : “I am delighted that this planting has taken place. It will greatly enhance the local area for wildlife and remove carbon dioxide from the air, as well as providing screening and amenity for the very popular holiday park site.

“This is just the latest example of the Humber Forest in action; we are in the middle of getting over 60 hectares of trees planted in the East Riding, Hull and North Lincolnshire areas this season. That will amount to over 100,000 trees in the ground by the spring of this year, which should have a significant impact on the wildlife, landscape and communities of the area. There are even more ambitious targets for next year, too.”

The Humber Forest is the community forest for the East Riding, Hull, and North Lincolnshire. It is a partnership between East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Hull City Council, and North Lincolnshire Council, together with businesses, community groups and the public.

It is one of 13 community forests across England in receipt of Defra’s Trees for Climate funding, and one of four that make the Northern Forest. The Northern Forest scheme is the Government’s 25-year vision to plant 50 million trees across the north of England, from Merseyside to the East Yorkshire coast, in collaboration with The Woodland Trust.

Any organisation wishing to get involved with the development of the Humber Forest or which has land that could be included should visit the Humber Forest website.
