The number of open public toilets in Whitby this weekend is being reduced.

Today and tomorrow the facilities at Ruswarp and at Market Place, which is already partially closed due to a drainage issue, will be shut.

Whitby Town Council's other toilets at West Cliff, Pier Road, New Quay Road and Abbey Headland, will open on reduced hours. The authority says it is working with its cleaning contractor Danfo Ltd to return services to normal as soon as possible.

Whitby Town Council says it has been faced with a difficult decision.

Town Mayor, Cllr. Linda Wild, said:

"We have been affected by Covid and our cleaners are unable to cover all of our sites this weekend. Our contractor has tried to recruit relief staff, but they are experiencing the same problem as many local hospitality businesses who are struggling to fill jobs in their cafes and kitchens.

It's a double whammy because we have been hit by drainage problems in the Market Place too. Our dilemma is whether to close some toilets or accept that the standards may be below par in all of them. We apologise sincerely for this shortfall in service."
