It's a subject that not many people talk about, especially those in the public eye, but model and TV presenter Chrissy Teigen has revealed her struggles with postpartum depression.

Chrissy, wife of John Legend and mother to 11-month old Luna, opened up in an essay saying, "I couldn’t figure out why I was so unhappy."

The couple have been together for over 10 years and married for just over three, with Chrissy giving birth to Luna in April last year.

At the time Chrissy joked that husband John was recovering well after the birth, tweeting 'john is healing perfectly' sic.

However, in reality it was Chrissy who was struggling.

The 31-year-old went back to work presenting on Lip Sync Battle just four months after giving birth.

"Getting out of bed to get to set on time was painful. My lower back throbbed; my shoulders—even my wrists—hurt," she wrote in the essay published by Glamour magazine.

"One thing that really got me was just how short I was with people."

She struggled to leave her house apart from going to the studio for work and felt she didn't have the energy to do anything.

Finally just before Christmas she had her diagnosis. She went to her doctor's for a physical and while she was there her she told him how she had been feeling. As he read out the symptoms of postpartum depression she was like "yep, yep, yep".

Since her diagnosis she has started treatment and has plans to see a therapist saying,

"There are weeks when I still don’t leave the house for days; then I’m randomly at the Super Bowl or GRAMMYs. (This is cringeworthily unrelatable, and I am very aware of that—it’s giving me anxiety.)"

However she thanked the people around her, especially her husband saying,

"I’m grateful for the people around me. John has been incredible over the last nine months, bringing me my medicine and watching horrible reality TV with me."

Chrissy ended the essay saying that the depression hasn't changed how much she loves John or Luna, going on to say that she's hated hiding this from you the reader.

Since the publication of her essay Chrissy has taken to Twitter to tell fans not to 'tiptoe' around her.

Chrissy has currently put her second cookbook on hold until she is better.
